This position is organizationally aligned under the Police Service, San Francisco VA Health Care System, a complexity level 1a VHA facility, with duties performed at the San Bruno Community Based Outpatient Clinic. VA Police Officers enforce Federal and appropriate State and City criminal codes, VA Directives and Regulations originating in Federal Statute in the physical protection of patients, visitors, and employees; protection of property of the United States Government and personal property on VA controlled property; protection of the civil rights of all individuals while on VA controlled property and in the preservation of peaceful requisites to the operation of medical treatment programs. Major Duties include:
Maintain law, order and the investigation, detention and apprehension of individuals suspected or convicted of offenses on VA property Determine the need for and conduct searches to collect and secure contraband that can cause bodily harm to patients, employees, and visitors Performs traffic control and investigates traffic accidents Stop suspicious person(s) and tactfully ask questions to determine the nature of their business and provide appropriate direction or control Defuses stress associated with enforcing laws or regulations when the sensitivity in handling the situation is heightened by the nature of the offender than the seriousness of the crime Use interpersonal communication skills to seek compliance with applicable laws and regulations on minor offenses that do not involve personal injury or loss of property Process crime scenes by identifying, photographing, preserving, collecting and safeguarding the evidence Make arrest or apprehensions when necessary, using the appropriate level of force Interprets and follows prescribed Medical Center agreements with local law enforcement agencies with respect to exchanging information, serving of processes, assisting investigations of other jurisdictions Ensures law enforcement and physical security standards are maintained and exercised with a high degree of efficiency Maintain a high state of physical condition and appearance when wearing the police uniform in accordance with established policy Work Schedule:
12 hour shifts including weekends and holidays - alternating from 6:
00am to 6:
00pm and 6:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Note:
Work as a Security Officer, Watchman or Private Guard IS NOT considered as specialized experience for this position. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification with a 9mm firearm and long gun, and successful qualification with the expandable straight baton. The officer must meet the standards as outlined in the Lautenberg Amendment (PL 104-208) to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (18 USC 922). Persons who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot own, be issued, purchase or otherwise have possession of a handgun. New VA Police Officers are required to attend a 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty. A character investigation will be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Physical Requirements:

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
